Open Source distributions in a cloud-native world: from a technical to a legal point of view

Lina Böcker (Partner at Osborne Clarke Germany)
Angelika Wittek (Independent)

Are you contributing to an Open Source project? Great! And do you know how to distribute the software in a cloud-native world? Or what making software publicly available legally implies, especially when it comes to containers and AI generated code? Are tech and legal two contradicting things?

If you want to learn about up-to-date insights, this talk is for you! Bonus: We will share insights on the Cyber Resilience Act from a legal perspective.

Building a successful OSPO with the Good Governance Initiative Handbook

Boris Baldassari (Eclipse Foundation)

While organisations better appreciate the amount of open source software they use and better understand how critical it has become to their effectiveness, many still struggle to manage it properly - both as consumers, and as participants in the ecosystem. Setting up an Open Source Program Office (or OSPO), with a proper framework to structure and build a successful open source strategy, is a good step forward to better manage these new concerns.

A Vision of FOSS @Mercedes-Benz

Wolfgang Gehring (Mercedes-Benz Tech Innovation GmbH)

At Mercedes-Benz, we moved from only using FOSS in our own software development practices to fully embracing all aspects of it and striving to become a true member of the FOSS World. This means we needed a dedicated Open and Inner Source strategy and an Open Source Program Office – but first we had to define what it really means to “embrace FOSS”.

From Fragmentation to Connection: The Role of a Chat Service in Building Bridges Across Communities, Projects, and Tools.

Sébastien Heurtematte (eclipse foundation)

If you are used to working in multiple development communities, you understand how challenging it can be to find your way around quickly. In order to be as effective as possible and contribute rapidly without getting stuck by too many formal communication mechanisms (such as ticketing), the role of informal communication becomes important.

This is just one example among many others. Let's reintegrate chat platforms into our processes as a central tool for the success of open-source projects.

I'm not a legal, but... feel concerned anyway. A copyright and license story.

Vincent HEMERY (Bonitasoft)

Note that I'm actually not a legal person (and this is not legal advice).
As I have been training developers for over 10 years, I still feel a bit baffled by the lack of knowledge regarding licenses and copyright ownership among developers in general.
Probably, in opensource software communities, we are more aware of these subjects. But truth is, when you ask other developers whether they feel confident about their practices to ensure license compatibility, they'll often ask for the full presentation speech.

Success stories of open source collaboration in the Eclipse Cloud Dev Tools ecosystem

Jonas Helming (EclipseSource)

In all industries, people discuss the power of open source and open collaboration. But how does this really work in practice? Who does the actual work and who pays for it? Why and how do stakeholders invest into open source projects and how do they convince others to do the same. Finally, how can even competing companies work together in an open way? Join this talk, we will provide you with the answers based on real world examples and success stories!
