Ah, the excitement of being in an escape room. The chaos, the rush, the adrenaline. The goal is clear: we need to get to the solution! We need it fast! Now! People talk simultaneously. Run around. Scream at each other. And the time is ticking...
Take a breath. Focus. Communicate.
What do I see, standing over here? What do you see, standing over there?
Can we make sense of that?
Can we, by communicating and collaborating, bring this challenge to a victory?
In software development there is so much value in communicating and collaborating, but we tend to forget this when the pressure rises. Like in an escape room the goal is clear, but the road towards success isn't. It is up to us to create that path together. Setting a clear goal helps us to be engaged and committed to the product and given deadlines (sadly those still exist even in an agile environment).
Often we find challenges on the horizon, but the way we look at them is quite different when we are in a escape room versus in developing software. Where we celebrate crushing a challenge in an escape room we often feel demotivated when we find a bug or struggle to find a solution for a bump in the road. Why don't we celebrate the small victories that we conquer on the road towards our end goal? Challenges give us opportunities to work together. And with a proper mindset we can even get a sense of satisfaction while crushing those unforeseen challenges.
With this talk Klaartje and Patrick want to give you more awareness about your mindset next time you experience pressure in your working space. Set your goal! Roll up your sleeves! Tackle those challenges and celebrate!
