Docs-as-code using AsciiDoc & Antora for open standardization

Christian Gödert (ASAM e. V.)

For the past three years the standardization organization ASAM e.V. has been working on a docs-as-code approach for the continued development of its open standards. This approach is built from the ground up to support modern collaborative workflows with open source solutions like Gitlab, AsciiDoc and, lately, Antora at its core. This presentation will provide some insight into the motivation behind the transition from classical approaches used in standardisation, the workflow we have setup, the challenges we encountered along the way and where we want to continue evolving the toolchain.

Theia Architecture Overview

Thomas Mäder (Castle Ridge Software)

In this talk you will learn how Eclipse Theia works at a high level. We'll be looking at the parts that make up a Theia application, both on the source-code level and at runtime, and how they play together.

This talk is for you if you want to get into working with Theia source code. Maybe because you're planning to adopt Theia for a product, maybe because you want to contribute to the framwork, or maybe you're just interested in understanding how a modern, desktop-like Typescript application works.

34 keys is all you need: an ergonomic keyboard journey

Mattia Dal Ben (Eurotech)

In the latest years the custom mechanical keyboard scene has blown up significantly, reaching mainstream status among (not only) software developers. Nevertheless there's an overlooked niche of this hobby that greatly benefits from the open source ecosystem and the online community: ergonomic mechanical keyboard.

In this talk I'll walk you through the deep end of the custom ergonomic mechanical keyboard rabbit hole and explain why 34 keys is all you need (really!) and what are the benefits of such a keyboard.

The Next Frontier in Open Source Java Compilers: Just-In-Time Compilation as a Service

Rich Hagarty (IBM)
Marius Pirvu (IBM)

For Java developers, the Just-In-Time (JIT) compiler is key to improved performance. However, in a container world, the performance gains are often negated due to CPU and memory consumption constraints. To help solve this issue, the Eclipse OpenJ9 JVM provides JITServer technology, which separates the JIT compiler from the application.

Time is running out...

Tim Ward (Kentyou)

The time to prevent global warming from reaching the 1.5°C threshold is running out. Mobility represents around 25% of Europe’s greenhouse gas emissions and it is the main cause of air pollution in cities, a major threat to urban citizens with adverse health outcomes. Emerging ICT technologies such as IoT, big data and AI can help cities to overcome this challenge and reach EU’s carbon neutrality objective. However, there are still quite few technical challenges to be tackled with to take maximum benefit of those technologies.

Practical wisdom to build your OSPO: The Good Governance Initiative

Daniel Izquierdo
Boris Baldassari (Eclipse Foundation)

Every organisation nowadays heavily relies on open source software and on its ecosystem, and Open Source Program Offices (OSPOs) are becoming an essential component of our landscape. But for many of us, and for many organisations, the impact of open source software and ecosystem is still not clear, nor what should be done to properly manage it at a strategic level.

Eclipse Hara: Updating Embedded Devices with hawkBit Made Easy

Matteo Di Pirro (Kynetics)
Nicola La Gloria (Kynetics)

The Eclipse Hara project aims to provide solid open-source reference implementations of a hawkBit DDI client. In this talk, we’ll focus on the new hara-ddiclient, a Kotlin library designed to facilitate and speed up the development of DDI API clients for any device capable of running on the JVM. Furthermore, the hara-ddiclient library is designed to be agnostic with respect to the type of update to install (apps, OS OTA).

Bringing hawkBit to production

Andrea Zoleo (Kynetics)
Nicola La Gloria (Kynetics)

Eclipse Hawkbit is a popular domain-independent back-end framework for deploying software updates to any kind of IoT device.

The talk gives an overview of the missing dots that Kynetics has developed to integrate the hawkBit project at the heart of its UpdateFactory product. Aspects such as security, scalability, resilience, deployment and management of a hawkBit-based product are addressed.

The talk also explores hawkBit's some interesting internal features that are not openly documented or commonly known, for instance:

EDDIE - Enabling Distributed Intelligence in Oniro

Stefan Schmidt (Huawei Technologies Co., LTD.)

The EDDIE project, within the Oniro working group, has the objective to design
a middleware capable of giving to the applications and services an unified global
view on cross-device resources. The various devices are not seen any more as
individual entities with specific resources, but as a unified pool of virtual
resources.

Using the E4 spies to debug your Eclipse application.

Olivier Prouvost (OPCoach)

Are you a RCP developer using the E4 runtime with or without the compatibility layer ? This talk will give you information to help you in your plugin development.

The E4 spies have moved this year to the PDE project and are directly available when you run your application using Eclipse. You don’t need anymore to install them separately.

This is may be the moment to remind you how to use them to debug your application.

Deployment options for OSGi applications in the cloud/edge

Dirk Fauth (Robert Bosch GmbH)

There are different ways to deploy a Java application. Traditionally it was a single JAR or a collection of JARs on a machine that has a matching Java Runtime installed. Today there are additional formats like a custom created JVM via jlink or a native compiled Graal Substrate. This gets especially interesting when thinking about deployment of smaller applications for processing tasks via containers in the cloud or on edge devices.
