Design: Making the World Simple, Fair, and Beautiful

The Age of Enlightenment carried promises of emancipation for everybody. If it brought about our democracies, it also allowed our industrial, economic and social revolutions, using technology as a lever. Has this promise been kept throughout these revolutions? Are we freer, more autonomous, happier? Are technologies our liberators or our jailers ? Whether open or closed, proprietary or public, technologies are nothing without a global human project. It will take more than the simple opening of technologies to bring about the promises of a new Enlightenment. An awareness of the human experience must be at the heart of all processes, including the design of open-source communities. A successful design is built on a basic but challenging tryptic: simplicity, fairness, and beauty.
