As a developer we tend to see OSS as a tool in our box we either want to use or on the other side want to maintain. On a company level the discussion about the ethics behind large corporations using Open Source and what they should contribute is already on its way, especially since the log4shell incident.
A dimension that need more attention is the Open Source idea in publicly funded projects. As a citizen and as a participant in current Smart City Projects, we could gain some insides and want to raise awareness. OSS is in our perspective a net gain for society and it should be the first thing on every bodies mind, when they need to do something around a publicly funded project.
I'd like to share some insides we have learned, while working with a public entity that embraces the open source idea. What we have seen from other municipalities and how companies acted that smelled money. This is not meant as a presentation on how I see, how the world should work, but as a discussion opener on how we as a community can push this topic.
