An association with the name openAPC Foundation e.V. was established in July 2010 in Dresden, Germany for developing and the distribution of free available Advanced Process Control (APC) software solutions. APC software is used to reveal process deviations and to increase process stability, i.e. during production and manufacturing processes.

The openAPC Foundation association is founded and supported by leading European companies, known from the semiconductor, solar, automotive and healthcare industry, with the objective to spread this beneficial APC technology to other companies and markets. To support a fast ramp up of the openAPC Foundation, the Landshut Silicon Foundry GmbH (LFoundry GmbH) donated code which can be used immediately without costs.

This talk explains the foundation process beginning in 2009 and why we decided to prepare the integration of the openAPC Foundation into the "Eclipse IWG" organization. The talk covers the steps, experiences, decisions and challenges to receive the formal registration finally successfully in July 2010.

These steps to setup this open source consortium were supported by the OSBF (Open Source Business Foundation), represented by Richard Seibt and Ralph Mueller, Director of the Eclipse Foundation in Europe. Due to their profound experiences to establish open source business models, it was possible to develop the structure of the openAPC Foundation very fast and efficient.

Bernhard Schimunek is co-founder and member of the board of directors of the openAPC Foundation (www.openapc-foundation.org), who is using open source for collaborative and consortial software development. He has more than 10 years hands-on experience in business development, international project management and business unit management of technology corporations * Business Consulting Schimunek * Elsternweg 7 * 86420 Anhausen * Germany * Email: bernhard@schimunek.de
