In today's computing, computer operation can be viewed in three dimensions: Every software under load reaches the limits of one of these dimensions. After that, the users can either add more resources to the given dimension or try to optimize the software itself. While there are plentiful tools addressing the first two dimensions, IO profiling and debugging has been somehow neglected. The amount and structure of IO is one of the major factors, limiting performance of software. In today's world of multi-core and parallel computing it could easily become the next bottleneck. I/O is also at the very heart of many software correctness issues that are difficult to investigate and fix.
