Both, textual and graphical representation of models have their pros and cons: While graphical syntax is easier to grasp on a higher level and highlights cross references much better, text can provide more details and is easier to put under version control. In this talk I present how graphical modeling with GMF and textual modeling with Xtext can be combined in a single Eclipse-based modeling tool to get the best of both worlds.

Dr. Jan Köhnlein is working as software architect and consultant for itemis AG in Kiel (Germany). He has earned several years of experience in developing tools for model-driven software development. He leads the EMF Index project and commits to several other Eclipse Modeling Projects.

Jos Warmer has a long time focus on software modeling and language angineering. He is project lead of the Mod4j open source project (www.mod4j.org), which uses the Eclipse Modeling project extensively to provide a flexxible and scaleable modeling environment for Java developers. Jos has been involved in authoring the UML standard, with an emphasis on OCL. He publishes books and papers and presents on a regular basis about various subjects concerning Model Driven Dwevelopment.
