The Xtext framework greatly eases the development of textual domain specific languages (DSL). The version 0.7.0 of Xtext was part of this year’s Galileo Release and the next major release will be available with Eclipse Helios which is due Summer 2010. While the framework already provides a mighty, full fledged IDE for your very own languages, a greatly customizable environment and a very good integration into the Eclipse modeling ecosystem, the next version will be a great step forward towards the vision of language workbenches. In this talk we will present the state of the art in textual DSL development with Xtext, some core concepts behind the scenes and ideas for the next version. We’ll demonstrate existing and new features and give a glimpse on the things that are to come in Helios with TMF Xtext 0.8.

Sven Efftinge (itemis) works as consultant, coach and developer. He leads the itemis lab in Kiel which focuses on domain-specific modeling, generator development and Eclipse technologies. He is project lead of the Xtext framework at eclipse.org and the original architect of the Xpand language family (a.k.a. openArchitectureWare 4). Sven is also a speaker at software conferences, co-author of a book and writes articles for magazines.

Sebastian Zarnekow (itemis) is a software architect and consultant at itemis in northern Germany. He develops frameworks and tools for model-driven and language oriented software development and is a committer for Xtext, Xpand and MWE. Sebastian is a speaker at conferences and author of articles for magazines.
