Open-Xchange provides collaboration solutions to SMEs via Service Providers like Hosters, Telcos, and ISPs. By the end of 2008 OX will have more than 9mn seats from paying customers. The company decided to base its server backend technology on Equinox in 2008 and is rolling out its first OSGi (Equinox) based version to customers now in September 2008. The talk proposed will introduce the capabilities and technology of Open-Xchange Server 6, as well as the motivation, status and future objectives in embracing Eclipse Equinox as the foundation for our business. On a broader perspective, Open-Xchange's engagement with Equinox is embedded within an Eclipse oriented strategy. Open-Xchange is open source today, the company has complete ownership over the IP in the codebase and will therefore be able to embrace EPL licensing straight away. Open-Xchange has joined Eclipse as a Member in 2008 and aims to establish Open-Xchange Server as an Eclipse Project. Further refactoring of Open-Xchange Server (future objectives around Equinox, see above) will provide collaboration software components in Eclipse Equinox Bundles. The talk will briefly outline the implications around Eclipse in general and then focus on Equinox and our learnings from what we have achieved so far.
