With deregulation taking hold in the Swiss, German and other European insurance markets, flexibility, diversity and time-to-market for new products are becoming increasingly important in the marketplace. Additionally, insurers are competing by introducing new customer segments and new sales channels. Marketing campaigns are created every month. The resulting requirements for product development can no longer be met by traditional software programming. We will show how the Eclipse Modeling Framework (EMF) can be used to define a meta-model for insurance products. From this meta-model an editor for the product structure will be generated. The products defined in this editor are then be enriched by business rules using a commercial business rule management system. They also serve as the basis for multilingual GUI representations, document creation and a Wiki-based testing system. Using EMF allows for an extremely agile product development process, not only in terms of actual products, but even for changes in the underlying meta-model. This gives our customers the ultimate flexibility in product definitions and at the same time improves the stability and maintainability of the underlying systems.
