How to migrate a large application in small steps, each step going live independently? This project, in progress since Mai 2007, will give you an insight view into the step-by-step migration of a VisualBasic (VB) based document management and workflow system (DMWS) to Eclipse RCP. The application of a german finance company has evolved since 1996, therefore it was not possible to migrate it in less than 2 years. It was necessary to find an approach which allowed each milestone to go live without dependencies. So we had to find a convenient way to communicate from Visual Basic to Java... With SOA in mind we also switched from a fat client (VB) to an Eclipse-based C/S Application.

Alexander Schleif is member of the “Methods, Architectures & Tools” team of Deutsche Bausparkasse Badenia AG. The finance company is Germany’s fourth largest, private building and loan association. There he has been working in various Java projects since 2000.

Heinz Drews is Chief Architect for Cenit AG in Stuttgart. He has more than 35 years experience in the IT industry, primarily with complex integration projects.
