A part of the Riena project is its user interface focusing on business applications. It extends the existing RCP Eclipse UI with the aim to reduce complexity - both for the end user and for the application developer. Some of the flexibility that comes with the RCP, e.g. the ability to open, rearrange and close views at will, can be intimidating for less experienced users and may give hotline staff a hard time.Riena provides UI elements to allow intuitive navigation through a tree-like application model. Riena suggests separating the business logic from a View by moving it to a ViewController. A ViewController interacts with the actual UI widgets through Ridgets (Riena Widgets). Ridgets are based on existing Eclipse technologies but offer a convenience interface with a higher level of abstraction. Examples are databinding and a marker concept that allows marking an input field as mandatory or as incorrect. The intention is to lower the barrier for new RCP developers and to ensure uniform look&feel and navigation across an application.

Carsten Drossel is a software engineer since 2001 with andrena objects AG. Since 2005 he is working for compeople AG on the Smart Client platform. He is a committer for the Eclipse Riena project which provides a homogeneous platform for building multi-tier-enterprise Client/Server applications, using Eclipse RCP. Carsten’s focus is on user-interface and user-interaction.

Heiko is a software engineer, eclipse riena committer and trainer at compeople located in Frankfurt(Germany). The focus of his activity is the development of smart client architectures and applications based on the riena framework.
