Over the last few years Grid infrastructures are becoming the backbone of those fields of science and research that require the solution of complex computational problems. At the same time, the commercial application of Grid technologies has led to new categories of offerings (e.g. on-demand computing) and are likely to play an important role in the "e;software as a service"e; landscape. However, the complexity of Grid infrastructures is often discouraging to new and inexperienced users and impedes the use of Grid technologies in new application domains. The g-Eclipse project – funded by the European Commission – is therefore building an integrated workbench framework to access the power of existing Grid infrastructures, based on top of the reliable ecosystem of the Eclipse community to enable sustainable development.

The talk will give a short introduction in the domain of Grid computing – in science and business – generally and to the general use cases for users of Grid infrastructures. After the g- Eclipse project will be presented, the architecture and integration of g-Eclipse framework will be shown. The status of the project and future plans will be discussed. During the talk (depending on a reliable internet connection) demos will be given to give a deeper insight in the potential of worldwide Grid infrastructures and potential of the user-friendly, Eclipsebased access to Grid infrastructures.

Dr. Harald Kornmayer works at the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe in the domains of Scientific and Grid Computing. Previously, he worked in astro particle physics for different scientific experiments, followed by an involvement in an international bank to develop a market risk system based on J2EE. He is involved in different national and international Grid Projects. Since July 2006 he has been scientific coordinator for the EC funded project g-Eclipse. Since autumn 2006 he has been project lead of the Eclipse Incubator Project g-Eclipse.

Mathias Stümpert joined the g-Eclipse project in July 2006. His background is astro particle physics where he contributed to JAVA based analysis tools and experiment control systems. Within the g-Eclipse project he is responsible for the architecture of the g-Eclipse framework and the integration of the different g-Eclipse components. He has been an Eclipse committer since autumn 2006.
