What role should open source play in your software development and go to market strategy? In this session, Paul Clenahan talks about how Actuate, an enterprise software vendor in the business intelligence space, incorporated open source as a strategic element of their development and marketing strategy in order to increase market share and product revenue. The session explores the different ways that open source could be leveraged and how Actuate evolved from simply using open source to leading 'BIRT', one of the top-level projects within the Eclipse Foundation. This session is aimed at Product Managers and Development Managers and looks at the pros and cons of different open source strategies, as well as key elements that need to be in place for an open source strategy to be successful.

Paul has over 18 years experience in the enterprise business intelligence industry working in a variety of Product Management and consulting roles with diverse customer applications. Paul is currently responsible for coordinating overall product direction and vision for Actuate Corporation based on emerging technology trends, market demands, customer feedback and internal innovation. Paul is a member of the open source Eclipse Business Intelligence and Reporting Tools (BIRT) Project Management Council (PMC) and Eclipse Requirements Councils. Paul holds a B.Sc. in Computer Science from Edinburgh University, Scotland.
