How E.ON uses open source IoT technology for monitoring & control of their renewable energy plants

This talk is scheduled for 11:15 - 12:20 in the FMZ Präsentationsraum as part of the IoT Day.

Since 2012 openSCADA, the predecessor to Eclipse SCADA, is used at E.ON for monitoring and control of solar, wind and biomass plants. During that time new features got implemented as requested by the customer and we upgraded the whole stack from the existing openSCADA base to the newest Eclipse SCADA release.

Software Updates for the Internet of Things (sponsored by Bosch)

Software updates for embedded edge devices or the more powerful controllers and gateways is a core IoT process that is needed in most IoT scenarios.

However, rolling out software updates in an IoT landscape brings lots of challenges to the table. You have to cover a load of functional and non functional requirements. The software update process is the one that shall never fail and also never be compromised as it can fix in theory close to any issue on the device and at the same time is the greatest security threat to it.

The Future of MQTT

After the standardization of MQTT 3.1.1 at OASIS was completed in 2014, the work of the technical committee did not end there. The brief for 3.1.1 was to reach consensus with the minimum amount of changes from 3.1, so that a standard could be published promptly. That left a raft of suggestions for improvements to be considered at a later date.

Creating an Open Approach to Take the Smart Home to the Mass Market

In order to move the connected home to the next level, over the last three years Deutsche Telekom has built an open connected home platform, under the name QIVICON. It was successfully launched in Germany in late 2013 and is now available internationally as a white label solution, and a foundation for multiple connected home initiatives. QIVICON is based on the Eclipse SmartHome project.
