You should always use a StringBuilder - it's faster than plain concatenation! Don't use an ArrayList but a LinkedList instead, this will speed things up! You should definitely make that method final - then the VM can optimize it! There exist hundreds of similar pieces of wisdom that we Java developers have to keep in mind in our daily work.
