The Eclipse 4 application model supports a light-weight mechanism to augment the functionality of a basic application through Addons. Addons are self-contained bits of code that can be used to augment an application's functionality but due to their encapsulation may trivially be added or removed from a system. This talk will explain the Addons mechanism and demonstrate how it can be used to provide tight integration with the containing application while maintaining the necessary encapsulation. It will also demonstrate how addons can be used to provide sophisticated functionality such as Minimize/Maximize or Drag and Drop as well as some of the design considerations such as inter-addon dependencies.

Eric is a Platform UI and E4 committer and a major proponent of model driven UI systems. He has 30+ years experience as a user interface developer / architect and is pleased to see that there is still lots of work to be done in the area.
