Markus Knauer

The first Cloud infrastructure service offers are available in the IT world. The first Open Source tools based on Eclipse technology were announced by various Cloud providers. Now that all these tools are freely available, it is time to compare them in order to provide guidelines for developers who want to start with a flight through the Cloud.

In this presentation, the Eclipse plugins from Amazon (announced at EclipseCon 2009) will be compared with the tooling for Microsoft Azure (announced at Eclipse Summit Europe 2009). Additionally, the features of the g-Eclipse project will be presented. g-Eclipse 1.0 was released in December 2009 as an Eclipse project for Grid and Cloud computing within the Eclipse community. g-Eclipse is a framework that allows users and developers to access Computing Grids and Cloud Computing resources in a unified way.

Based on open interfaces, the framework itself is independent of any particular Grid middleware or Cloud Computing provider. The g-Eclipse project maintains a set of connectors to Grid middlewares and provides an adapter to the Amazon webservices EC2 and S3. The integration of Windows Azure is ongoing. Finally, we will discuss briefly how the g-Eclipse framework can contribute to the goals of the Open Cloud Manifesto such as interoperability and freedom of choice for Cloud users.

Markus Knauer works as Eclipse developer and consultant at EclipseSource. There he is involved in the development of the Yoxos Eclipse Distribution and is working on multiple projects developing Eclipse-based SDKs.

He is project lead of the Eclipse Packaging Project and creates all those packages that can be downloaded from the Eclipse Foundation website, co-lead of the g-Eclipse project that is building a framework which allows to easily work in a Grid Computing or Cloud Computing environment, a member of the Eclipse Planning Council as representative for EclipseSource and elected member of the Architecture Council.
