Dimitar Valtchev

In the last years OSGi is used successfully in various segments such as automotive, mobile and enterprise, but it has its roots in the so called “smart home” area and many residential products (e.g. home gateways, intelligent home control panels, tablets, advanced remote controls, media centers, set-top boxes) are already build on this platform – with a lot more showing up right now. A significant number of the residential use cases require remote management and the OSGi expert groups are currently actively addressing this need. This development is also accelerated by the success of the mobile device/software management and the so called Fixed Mobile Convergence.

This presentation summarizes the requirements for device management in the “smart home“ area, discusses the related specification/development efforts in OSGi, Eclipse, Home Gateway Initiative (HGI), Broad Band Forum (BBF), UPnP Forum, and shares experience from real-life projects using device management.

Dr. Dimitar Valtchev is Chief Technology Officer of ProSyst Software which has been deeply involved in the OSGi development since 1999. His main interests are in the fields of embedded systems, device management, and distributed computing. Currently Dimitar, who is leading a team of 120+ OSGi developers at ProSyst, is involved in numerous projects using the OSGi technology.
