How does REST complement ESB based SOA implementations, and how can REST by itself implement SOA? Starting from a high-level set of SOA principles, we will consider ESB types and evolution, drawing on a number of open source ESB implementations as examples. We will discuss how well these ESB examples support SOA principles. Next we will consider how REST integrates with typical ESB architectures. Turning our attention to REST, we'll then ask how SOA might be realized without an ESB, using only REST services. Along the way, we'll demonstrate open source Eclipse plug-ins being developed at JBoss for working with ESB and REST services, and we'll discuss possible directions that tools could play in REST based SOA.
