The runtime revolution at Eclipse is being driven simultaneously by technological advances and business/industry needs. Equinox and OSGi provide state of the art modularity infrastructure for building highly dynamic and flexible systems. Numerous projects at Eclipse and elsewhere expand on this to produce the middleware needed to implement real-world applications. At the same time, businesses consumers are under pressure to become increasingly agile in their processes and software. Mixed with both is the disappearing distinction between computing platforms such as embedded, server, cloud, desktop.
In this talk we explore key runtime technologies at Eclipse and tie them together in an integrated series of eye opening demos and situational interludes. Attendees will leave the talk having been exposed to Equinox, cloud computing, AJAX, OSGi, database integration, dynamic provisioning, VOIP, XMPP, single sourcing, embedded computing, remote services and more -- all elements of modern real-world solutions and all available today in the Equinox ecosystem.
Jeff McAffer leads the Eclipse
Equinox OSGi,
RCP and
Orbit teams and is co-founder and CTO of
EclipseSource. He is one of the architects of the Eclipse Platform and a co-author of
The Eclipse Rich Client Platform and
Equinox and OSGi - The power behind Eclipse (Addison-Wesley). Jeff co-leads the Eclipse
RT
PMC and is a member of the
Eclipse Project PMC, the
Tools Project PMC, the Eclipse Architecture Council and the Eclipse Foundation Board of Directors. Jeff is currently interested all aspects of Eclipse componentry from designing, developing and building bundles to deploying, installing and ultimately running them. Previous lives include being a Senior Technical Staff Member at IBM, work in distributed/parallel OO computing (Server Smalltalk, massively parallel Smalltalk, etc) as well as expert systems, meta-level architectures and a PhD at the University of Tokyo.
