In order for agile development processes to be successful, there also has to be agility in the test process. In terms of automated tests, this means that tests should be quick and easy to create and maintain, to keep up with frequent iterations and changes . As simple as it sounds, this often proves to be a herculean task.

This talk presents experiences of agile testing based on three case studies. Because of time constraints of the talk, examples will be used from one of the case studies - an internal project. The aim in the project was to achieve test-driven development via the GUI. The emphasis was on the creation of black-box GUI tests which should grow alongside the software.

Naturally, this placed certain demands on the nature and methods of the tests. It also meant that certain standards had to be conceived and adhered to in terms of test design. This talk will present the principles of test design used and will make statements about the relative success of the test process – in terms of quality, effort and cost.

No test process is without its challenges, and test-driven development is no exception. Attendees of this talk will take home the lessons learned:

Hans-Joachim Brede is the founder of BREDEX GmbH and is one of its managing directors. He has implemented and managed multiple, highly complex customer projects and is responsible for the concepts in the development of the automated test tool GUIdancer. Hans holds a Master in Computer Science and was working with the University of Braunschweig and Digital Equipment as a technical consultant.
