Christian W. Damus

This talk presents the evolutionary leap that the MDT OCL component took from its 1.0 release to 1.1, and explores some of the neat discoveries found and lessons learned along the way. Three topics will be covered: (1) The Problem: The first release of the OCL component (in the EMFT project) was an Ecore-based parser and evaluation engine for the Object Constraint Language. The problem for the 1.1 release was how to bring this OCL implementation to other metamodels, in particular UML, using a single parser/interpreter core. Basics of the structure of OCL and its relationship to the OMG standard metamodels are presented. (2) Designing a Solution: MDT OCL 1.1 took advantage of EMF's generic types and MDT UML2's implementation of templates to devise a representation of the OCL Abstract Syntax metamodel and a Java API that support parsing and evaluation of OCL constraints on both Ecore and UML models. Salient details of the design are presented, with a live demonstration of OCL in action. (3) Reflections on 1.1 and Next Steps: The last part of the talk reflects on the hits and misses of the OCL 1.1 design, its role as a testbed for Ecore genericity, and an analysis of its extensibility into other metamodels. The talk closes with an outline of future directions for the MDT OCL component.

Christian's professional experience consists almost entirely of building modeling software with Java and related technologies, from spatial data modeling with RDBMS for web-based GIS applications to software modeling with UML at IBM Rational Software. His last 4+ years have been spent in building modeling frameworks on EMF, currently leading the MDT OCL component and a few EMF components in the Eclipse Modeling Project. Other activities that he enjoys in and around his Ottawa, Canada home are woodworking, canoe-camping, and music.
