Brian Carroll

The Eclipse Application Lifecycle Framework (ALF) took the latest emerging standards for security and web services (WS-Trust, WS-Federation, WS-Security, and SAML), combined them with open source implementations from Apache Axis2, and mixed in some elements from the Eclipse Higgins project to provide an authentication framework for a SOA-based integration of development tools. The result is that ALF provides a platform and framework for Single Sign-on and for conveying identity among all the tools invoked in a BPEL process that coordinates interactions among development tools. The initial focus of the framework is on authentication, but it lays the foundation for the authorization, integrity, and confidentiality aspects of security to be natural extensions. Come listen to the hands-on experiences of combining recent web service security standards with even more recent open source implementations to create a practical authentication platform for integrating SOA-based development tools.

Brian is the Project Lead for the Eclipse Application Lifecycle Framework (ALF) project and a Fellow at Serena Software. He has been developing software professionally for 40 years, the last 25 of which have been focused on developer tools and infrastructure. A former graduate lecturer in the Information Technology department of Johns Hopkins University, Brian has been a popular speaker and project leader at GUIDE, the OMG, Eclipse, and has presented at numerous industry events. Professional interests include SOA and web services, extended set theory, knowledge representation, and data modeling. He holds a MS in Applied Mathematics and BA in Mathematics.
