Open Health Tools (OHT) is a new consortium for open-source healthcare tooling that is intended to operate, and succeed, similar to the Eclipse Foundation. This talk focuses on the use of Eclipse UML modeling tools for creating new Open Health Tools that are specialized for HL7 message specification and design. We present a UML profile for HL7 message specification, model validation constraints, UML2Tools class diagram editor extension that colorize classes according to the HL7 methodology, and other model editing extensions that facilitate conformance with HL7 specification procedures.

Dave Carlson is an independent consultant specializing in model-driven design of XML Schemas and web service messages, with current emphasis on HL7 healthcare standards. Dave earned his Ph.D. in Information Systems from the University of Arizona and has over 25 years experience in software development and architecture. He is the author of two books by Addison-Wesley: "Modeling XML Applications with UML", and "Eclipse Distilled". Dave has been developing Eclipse plugins since the first week Eclipse was released in 2001.
