In the context of a legacy system, we will discuss how and why many different technologies were integrated into a single Eclipse RCP application. Eclipse RCP offered many benefits including a rich UI, a component architecture and quick development which won out over the browser based alternative being considered.

Over the past 18 months, a small development team built an Eclipse RCP application from scratch. The application is a "work-in-progress" replacement for an existing Smalltalk-based rich client application. Both applications support many departments in the administration division of a large pension plan.

We discuss how and why the following technologies were integrated:

We discuss how we balanced the trade-offs between using, adapting and inventing technologies to deliver the solution.

The target audience for this presentation are those who are currently developing an RCP application or considering it within the context of a legacy system.

Gifford is a software developer with more than 20 years of programming experience, including 7 years of experience with Java.
