Shawn Spiars

In this short talk we will discuss and demonstrate how Phurnace Software leveraged the Eclipse Rich Client Platform to rapidly develop a rich and highly functional user interface for our “Phurnace Deliver” product. The Eclipse community offers so many free, feature rich, extensible plug-ins that can save you time and resources when developing your client applications.

This short talk will include a quick demo of a real-world RCP application and touch on the specific plug-ins we used and the functionality we derived from them.

  • Rich Client Platform (RCP) - application infrastructure to build upon (editors, views, perspectives, actions, wizards, preferences)
  • Resources API – used to manage workspace resources
  • Common Navigator Framework (CNF) - navigation view for traversing workspace and non-workspace application artifacts
  • Web Standard Tools (WST) – XML Editor to visualize and edit XML files
  • UI Forms – utilized to create very cool, flat look editors
  • Help – web based Help and welcome pages

The target audience for this presentation is anyone who is currently developing an RCP application as well as those considering an RCP project.

  • Shawn Spiars is a software developer specializing in Eclipse Rich Client Platform and plug-in development. Shawn has been developing commercial Eclipse-based applications since Eclipse version 2.1. Shawn recently designed and developed the Eclipse RCP client for the Phurnace Deliver product.
