For the Ganymede release, the DTP (Data Tools Platform) SQL Development Tools project is adding a major new component, the SQL Query Builder. The SQL Query Builder is a graphical SQL editor that simplifies the development of SQL statements. It enables users with a rudimentary knowledge of SQL to construct complex SQL SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE statements. As well as being a core component of the SQL development tooling provided by DTP, the SQL Query Builder can be embedded by DTP adopters in their own tooling.
This talk will give an overview of the SQL Query Builder, describe its design and current status, and include a demonstration of how to use it and how to embed it in other components. The talk will also outline future developments for the SQL Query Builder, including the development of an enablement framework which will allow DTP adopters to customise the SQL Query Builder for their own databases.
Brian Payton, a software developer in IBM Information Management, has been developing database tools, particularly query builders and editors, throughout his 20-plus years at IBM. He co-leads the SQL Development Tools project within the Eclipse Data Tools Platform project. Mr. Payton has a B.S. in Computer Science from California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo, and works at IBM’s Silicon Valley Laboratory.
