Today, many customers are using Eclipse environments with a complex mix of Eclipse projects, and plug-ins from many providers. How can users be assured that a new plug-in will safely install into and run in their Eclipse environment and that the plug-in will provide the user experience and behavior they expect? While the Eclipse Foundation publishes excellent guidelines, how can users know that a new plug-in follows the appropriate guidelines without a long evaluation. This talk discusses how a plug-in validation or certification program can provide that assurance to customers. Based on the experience of running an Eclipse plug-in validation program since Eclipse 1.0, the presentation will note examples of user problems, both technical and non-technical, that can be checked for in a validation program, the customer value that validation can provide, and the value that such a program can provide to providers who participate. We will also discuss the challenges of maintaining a validation program in the Eclipse community and how providers can be encouraged to participate.
