been not only modified so as to support embedded systems as presented at our last year's EclipseCON poster, but also extended to support the performance monitoring tool based on the GNU profiler. The GNU debugger (GDB) server and a newly developed daemon for performance monitoring reside in the target embedded system to enable remote execution of an application cross-compiled at the host, and the retrieval of its execution statistics. The resulting statistics transferred through the Ethernet are converted to the Common Base Event (CBE) format so as to show results to the user using the Test and Performance Tools Platform (TPTP) which was originally designed for Java. These embedded system profiling operations are as simple and quick as local application profiling, because the communication between the host and the target is hidden to the user after specifying the remote IP address and the execution path at the startup. This demonstration shows how easy it is to measure the system performance of an MP3 audio decoder software running on a 133-MHz microprocessor core based on MIPS architecture with 32Mbyte RAM in real-time.

Kouhei Nadehara has been working on multimedia enhancements of 32-bit RISC and digital signal processors, their development tools and multimedia software implementations since he joined NEC in 1992.
