This tutorial presents the ongoing work regarding the BPMN modeler developed for the STP (SOA Tools Platform) project.

Prerequisites

We address different types of people : the business analyst and the developer.

The two first parts of th tutorial can be attended by non-technical people that want a better way to draw processes. The third part is dedicated to Java developers with a strong GMF experience.

Tutorial agenda

The tutorial will be divided in three parts:

Part 1. How to use the modeler

We will draw together a small process, using the palette, the handles, to create and connect shapes.

We will talk about advanced functionalities :

Setting a task as a looping task
collapse a subprocess
collapse a pool
sets a conditional sequence edge as the default edge
change the type of activity of a shape (transform a gateway into an activity and vice-versa)
Group shapes into subprocesses, ungroup subprocesses.

Part 2. BPMN modeler tools

As part of the development of the BPMN modeler, we have implemented or reimplemented some very useful graphical features:

Copy/paste has been improved to work in compartments
a new arrange algorithm has been developed to arrange shapes recursively
a new router to take into the position of the anchor, which is fied in the modeler.
A wizard to export as an image
A validation builder that enforces BPMN constraints
...

We will also talk about the generation API we have developed, which enables anyone to create a BPMN diagram without knowing about GMF.

We will present a generation sample that parses and transforms very basically BPEL into BPMN.

Part 3. How to reuse the modeler

We will show how to reuse the modeler from a developer standpoint.

We will :

introduce the audience to the annotations framework to extend the modeler, and provide them with a hands-on example.
show how one can change the behavior of the shapes
add validation rules to the editor.
show more feedback using a bubble.
